Women's Portraits
5 Women’s Casual Business Portrait Tips

1. In-Studio Sessions

In-studio Portrait sessions are ideal for busy female professionals. At Michael Carr Photography, we offer a professional studio within a commercial office building. Amenities include a controlled environment, a full dressing room, wifi, and on-set viewing of your session images as they are being captured. Each women’s portraits begins with a consultation to discuss your session goals, where the images will be used for marketing collateral, and what format and sizes are required for final images. At the end of your portrait session, you will review your images and make your selections. A digital artist will edit your final images in digital enhancement software to soften puffiness under the eyes, minimize smile lines and refine your portrait.

2. Attire & Accessories
For the Women’s Casual Portrait, we want the portrait to emphasize you. Blouses, skirts, dresses, and jackets should be in a solid color or have a light pattern. Feel free to bring up to 3-5 clean, well-pressed outfits to your session. If you normally wear glasses, wear them in your portrait. Lastly, when it comes to jewelry, less is best. We recommend wearing pearls or diamonds for a classic and polished look.

3. Grooming
Female professionals should have their hair and make-up done by a professional hairstylist and makeup artist the day of your women portraits session. A professional makeup artist will highlight your best features and choose the right colors to compliment your outfit for your photography session. We are happy to provide recommendations upon request. Also, consider your hands as they may show in your portrait. Some clients opt to get a manicure before their session and select a clear polish or neutral color for their nails.

4. Background Selection & Image Usage
Depending on your image specs and requirements, we will select a white, graphite or gray background that will compliment your attire. Please know in advance if your business portrait is head and shoulders or ¾ length or full-body length. Also please provide us any specific website or file specs you have for your final digital images.

5. Posing and Expression

To capture your executive presence, we recommend an expression that exudes confidence and leadership traits. Be careful with the excessive head tilting or straight on approach in your casual Business Portrait. For some, a closed mouth expression with a slight expression in the eyes works best. For others, a slight expression in the smile and eyes works better. In either case, approachability is the key. Proper body language and posing are as important as expression and clothing. As in any profession, the quality is in the details.

4 Tips to Hiring a Professional Photographer

If you are redesigning your website, implementing a new visual marketing campaign, or rebranding your corporate image, it’s important to hire a photographer who understands your vision and provides insights how to visually communicate your brand.

At Michael Carr Photography  at 713-461-2862, we begin our commercial projects with a consultation meeting with the creative stakeholders to discuss the overall vision of your company’s imagery.  This process allows us to determine your business objectives, brand requirements, and logistics to achieve a successful project. That’s why knowing what to look for in a professional photographer will help you hire the best photographer for the job.

What to Look for in a Professional Photographer

  1. Does the photographer have any relevant examples related to your industry?

– Hire a professional photographer with training and experience in lighting, posing, and branding.

– Ask to see a portfolio of work that are similar to your industry such as authors, law firms, energy executives, and doctors.

– Make sure your photographer has excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. This will help you feel relaxed during your photography session. Your business portraits will look natural and capture your personality.

– Select a photographer with quality references and photography certifications.

  1. Does the photographer work in studio or on location?   Do they have the business systems to handle your scope of work?

Consult with your photographer to discuss the overall vision of your company’s imagery:

– What is the corporate image you want to portray?

Where will the  images be used within the marketing collateral (web, print, both)?

– What format and sizes are required for final images?

– Where will the photo sessions take place: corporate headquarters, on-location, in-studio, off-site?

– What type of background is required: basic white, graphite, gray or environmental?

Make sure the photographer you’re hiring has a  studio, equipment, and lighting setup to execute your digital imagery. Also, ask if proper backup systems are in place to archive and retrieve your images efficiently. Or, they will specify their policy on how long they store your files.

How to Hire a Professional Photographer

  1. Does the photographer have an eye for detail and provides insights how to visually communicate your brand?

– Hire a photographer with an attention to detail ranges from proper clothing selection, body language, and posing techniques.

– Search the photographer’s website for articles on what to wear to a portrait session, posing tips, and frequently asked questions.

– Look for a photographer that offers on-set viewing of your session images as they are being captured. This will enhance your portrait session by viewing captured images in real time while on set.

– Ask for natural, subtle retouching on business images. You want your clients to see a positive representation of you.

  1. Is the photographer within your budget?

A photographer’s job is more than just pressing the shutter button. A professional photographer uses a combination of lighting, posing and post-processing to make your vision a reality. They learn these techniques after years of experience, training  and certifications. When you hire a professional photographer, you’re paying them for their expertise, their quality of work, and your desired results.

Finally, evaluate a photographer on their entire offering and value. Don’t focus only on price. The wrong photographer might make things worse so do your due diligence and be thorough in your research.

Houston Headshots

  1. Hire a Professional Photographer

Hiring a Professional Photographer can help you rebrand your company’s website in a positive way.

At Michael Carr Photography, we begin our commercial projects with a consultation meeting with the creative stakeholders to discuss the overall vision of your company’s imagery. We recommend that you have a detailed goal in mind and have a clear objective:

– what is the corporate image you want to portray?

– where will the  images be used within the marketing collateral (web, print, both)?

– what format and sizes are required for final images?

– where will the photo sessions take place: corporate headquarters, on-location, in-studio, off-site?

– what type of background is required: basic white, graphite, gray or environmental?

Plan ahead to provide the business requirements and file specifications for the project during the consultation meeting.

  1. Know Your Options

Your company’s imagery should match your brand. That’s why you need to know your portrait options to conform to your corporate branding. At Michael Carr Photography, we offer a wide range of portrait options including:

– location editorial portraits

– traditional corporate portraits in our studio or on location

– location environmental portraits

– color or black and white portraits in our studio or on location

– head and shoulder, ¾ length portraits, or full-length portraits.

We recommend clients invest in business portraits for the whole team to ensure company branding is consistent from executive leadership to board members, and across all marketing collateral and website imagery. 1. Stay Consistent

To provide a positive experience for your audience, it is essential to stay consistent with your website images. Consistency and approachability are the biggest factors that create a competitive edge in business.

As you review your website images, consider the following:

– Does your leadership page have corporate consistency regarding background, and branding?

– Are the backgrounds the same, are the images the same size, is the portrait lighting consistent?

– Is the attire consistent: open collar versus coat and tie?

– Are some images taken in-studio and some outdoors?

– Is the posing style consistent: head tilt versus straight on?

– Are the body crops consistent throughout the page ?

– How dated are the corporate images on your website?

Set a standard for your corporate imagery to match your brand. This way, your image updates for new hires or staff changes in the future will remain consistent.

  1. Understand the Value of Your Image

While it might be tempting to select a photographer based on price to save a few dollars, it’s best not to damage your business image with amateur photography. Your first impression should connect with your audience and communicate your corporate brand.  Michael Carr Photography will guide your posing, head position, clothing selection and expressions to capture your best look. When you understand the value of your professional image, you’ll understand why it’s not about price but the desired results.

Professional Business Portraits

Professional business portraits are a necessity in today’s business world. Especially when you hold a key position in your company, people associate your face with your business. Business Portraits represent leadership on corporate websites and establish a strong presence on business social websites like LinkedIn. Having a polished web image for digital marketing is crucial for your company and personal brand. Presenting a non-professional headshot could do more harm than good.

Here are a few tips to consider when considering a professional business portrait.

Women Business Portraits in Houston

 Attire
Professional business attire not properly adjusted can easily present a non tailored look. Issues like gapping in men’s shirt collars and tie to collar separation are commonly seen in non-professional headshots, but can be easily corrected in our studio. We recommend men’s ties are tied as a full Windsor knot and photographed centered on the dress shirts. For female professionals, we always recommend getting your hair and make-up done the day of your session. Keep your jewelry simple. Pearls are a classic. Blouses or dress shirts should be solid or have a light pattern.

Executive Portraits in Houston

Background Selection
Depending on your application, select a background that will compliment your attire. Know in advance if your business portrait is head and shoulders or ¾ length.

Posing and expression

For the business market, we recommend an expression that exudes confidence and leadership traits. Be careful with the excessive head tilting in your business portrait. For some, a closed mouth expression with a slight expression in the eyes works best. For others, a slight expression in the smile and eyes works better. In either case, approachability is the key.

A key to a successful session, keep in mind this is a Business Portrait. First impressions need to be trustworthy expressions. Proper body language and posing are as important as expression and clothing. As in any profession, the quality is in the details.
