What Should a Woman Wear for a Professional Headshot?
When considering what to wear for a professional headshot, it is important to remember that your clothing should be both flattering and appropriate. Women should choose a classic outfit that coordinates well with the background of their image. A simple, tasteful dress in a single color or neutral tone is ideal.
Your outfit should reflect professionalism and help to bring out your features. Avoid busy patterns, logos, and bright colors that can be distracting. Accessories should also be kept to a minimum; small stud earrings, a watch, and a simple necklace are all great options.
What type of clothing do I bring?
At Michael Carr Photography, Michael will consult with you on your attire for your business portrait. A good rule of thumb is to stick to timeless and classic clothing that you feel confident in. Form fitting outfits tend to be more flattering than loose or baggy clothing. We always recommend that clients bring with them several outfits to choose from. We can look at your wardrobe with you and select the best outfit for your portraits. Solid colored clothing is always best for a portrait.

What to Wear
- Try your outfits on at home first and select a variety to bring with you. You can schedule an in-studio clothing consult with the photographer on a day before your session if you need advice. Select and wear clothes that you are comfortable wearing and that fit you well.
- Avoid big prints and busy patterns.
- A white or cream-colored blouse by themselves is not recommended.
- Sleeveless blouses or tops by themselves are not recommended.
- For a no-jacket casual look, bring various colored blouses – ideally darker than your skin tone.
- Wear colors that compliment your features.
- Darker colors project a more business-like image.
- Makeup- wear a little darker than you normally would. Avoid shimmers or products with lots of sparkle or shine.
Jewelry:
- Keep jewelry simple.
- Avoid jewelry that would distract from your face or that looks dated.
- Bring a few accessories with you if you are unsure.
Arrive with:
- Hair styled and makeup already applied.
- You can arrive dressed in your outfit or you may change here in the studio. If changing here, please arrive 10 minutes prior to your session time.
- Various changes of clothing as needed. The basic package includes (1) outfit. Some people decide to upgrade and be photographed in two different outfits.
- Good attitude.
- Hairbrush/comb and spray.
- Makeup and lipstick for touch ups.
- Lip balm.
Makeup and Hair
We have several makeup artists that can take care of your hair and makeup in our studio. Many of our clients opt to have their hair and makeup professionally done for their portrait sessions. Please inquire about this before your session.
At the conclusion of your business portrait session, we will review all the images captured and help you with final image selections.
